Why contributing to your student's FAFSA or WASFA matters

Parents, do you know how important you are to your student’s future success? If your student is considered dependent on the FAFSA or WASFA, they need your information as a contributor to qualify for grants, scholarships, and work-study opportunities. Many schools require the FAFSA or WASFA to be completed before they offer additional gift aid to your student. We know this process can be a pain, but we are here to help! Book a 1-1 appointment with a member of the team or join us at a local completion event! Please enjoy this video created by FNW team members Regina Reid and Paige Holman to help you get excited. The end goal is incredible, and your student’s dreams truly rely on your support!

If that video didn’t pull at your heartstrings, perhaps these sobering statistics will. According to the Washington Roundtable’s Skill Up for Our Future Report, we are projected to have a skilled worker shortage in WA of 600,000 people and 1.5 million+ job openings by 2032. 75% of those opportunities will rely on students having a degree, apprenticeship, or high-value industry certification. Bachelor’s and advanced degrees will be in the highest demand and will be required for 45% of all job opportunities, not just those included in our skilled worker shortfall. These family-wage jobs have the potential to uplift multiple generations through education/training. Completing a Financial Aid application is critical to your student’s success in pursuing education after high school. “National research shows that 90% of students who complete a financial aid application attend college and that the main reason students do not complete one is they think it’s too complex or that they are not eligible for aid,” according to a Ready WA article. Given that completing a Financial Aid application is such a critical part of attaining education beyond high school, we hope you will support your student by doing your part and completing the parent contributor portion of the application. Check out our FAFSA/WASFA page for some additional resources to help you get started.

Are you considering going back to school too? FuturesNW would love to help you! As a non-traditional student myself, I got my bachelor’s degree in 2019 as a 39-year-old mom of 2, and I believe that you can do it too. Going back to school changed my life in profound ways. Before attending WWU, my husband and I were working 10 part-time jobs just to make ends meet. Neither of us had a bachelor’s degree and we were not eligible for family-wage jobs in our area because of it. My kids watched me work hard before and after my degree and we all agree that the hard work I am doing now is paying off. I now have 1 full-time job I love at FuturesNW that affords me time with my family and a living wage.

FuturesNW would love to help you and your student achieve your dreams by helping you complete your financial aid application and so much more!

-Ashley DeLatour, Executive Director of Programs

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!

Hello everyone!

We have some exciting news to share with you! He wasn’t looking for it, but our Financial Aid Program Coordinator Alan Alatorre-Barajas was offered and accepted his dream job creating curricula for Latine, migrant, and ELL youth that promotes Latine (and other authors of color) literature and illustrators for the Vamos Outdoors Project in April! Although it’s bittersweet to say goodbye to such a wonderful teammate at FuturesNW, we are beyond thrilled about this incredible opportunity Alan has to follow his big, important, beautiful dreams! As if all that awesomeness isn’t enough, Alan will also be starting a 12-week curriculum pocket MFA program this summer to continue his journey in education.

While at FuturesNW, Alan excelled at supporting families and students at Finacial Aid events, encouraging the team to practice gratitude, and working in collaboration to create stronger systems within our organization.

Alan, thank you for being a part of our organization’s and team’s growth. We are cheering you on in this next adventure and will savor your legacy of kindness and gratitude.

And because life is sometimes magical, we are lucky to introduce you to the newest WWU graduate of our team, Atiana Garza, as the new full-time interim Financial Aid and Mentorship Program Coordinator! Over the past 9 months, Atiana has worked with us part-time supporting, QuickStart to College, in-school mentorships, and Finacial Aid completions, all while being a full-time student at Western Washinton University and also working for the Western Success Scholars program. Atiana is self-motived, driven, hard-working, kind, thoughtful, smart, and so much more. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the opportunity to continue our journey with Atiana and have her join the team in a full-time capacity. Congratulations, Atiana!

I am so excited to expand my horizons and join FuturesNW in a full-time capacity. I look forward to working with you all! I hope you all experience a little joy today.
— Atiana

Learning with Leaders is getting a boost!

Initially piloted in 2019 at Options High School featuring careers in the Arts and Healthcare, our Learning with Leaders program has come a long way. With the support of a grant from Career Connect Washington, we are thrilled to announce the expansion of the program to serve students throughout Whatcom and Skagit County! Learning with Leaders connects students with in-demand career pathways by providing exploration that focuses on local employment, education, and support services. Students will get real-time, tactile training, such as the chance to operate heavy equipment under the guidance of experts, take part in virtual simulations, and discover their strengths through kinesthetic learning experiences. These events will provide a foundation of exploration to connect students with prep classes offered in their high schools and colleges that will subsequently launch them into a career of their dreams.

The first large-scale event will launch in Fall 2023, so over this next year we will be creating three different events focusing on our region’s top, high-wage, in-demand career sectors (advanced manufacturing, construction, healthcare, and information technology). Each event will host all 5 of our Whatcom and Skagit county colleges, local training programs, financial aid resources, career support services, and much more to help guide students towards pathway opportunities after high school that they're excited about.

Wanting to create the most informed and relevant events possible, we are gathering local experts from our community and schools to create an advisory board composed of students, educators, nonprofit leaders, and professionals. The advisory board as a whole will meet quarterly and the subcommittees focused on each industry sector, will meet monthly. We are in the midst of recruiting our advisory team, so if you have any interest in joining please fill out this survey! If you are a high school student interested in joining our Youth Advisory Board, please fill out this survey! Surveys are also linked in the QR codes below.

We are also hiring a program assistant for the planning of this program so if interested please click this link to see the job description and how to apply!

Any questions about the program, the advisory board positions, or the program assistant position please reach out to our Learning with Leaders Program Coordinator, Ashby McCoy, at amccoy@futuresnw.org
